Issues to talk about

Lorraine and the school nurse argue about whether schools should be teaching abstinence until marriage or providing condoms in schools. The nurse points out that while adults argue about such things, teens are still getting pregnant. She notes that comprehensive sex education – which includes messages about both abstinence and birth control – doesn’t lead teens to have sex. Instead, it encourages them to have safer sex. Do you agree?

Lorraine and Michael Dougan are caring parents who have a close relationship with their daughter, Sara. Lorraine believes that teens should remain abstinent until marriage, and feels that she has sent a clear message about this to her daughter. But, Sara still gets pregnant deliberately. What else could Lorraine and Michael have done to help their daughter avoid pregnancy and make better life choices? What do you think of Karissa’s relationship with her mom? Do any of the girls in the movie have good relationships with their parents? What does a good relationship between parent and teen took like?

Fact: Teens say their parents have the most influence over their decisions about sex; but, parents think peers and the media are more powerful. On the other hand, 42% of teens say that more open conversations with parents would be the most effective way to help teens avoid pregnancy.
