INTRODUCTION

This book is designed to bridge the gap between the many PHP and the many Oracle texts available. It shows how to use the PHP scripting language with the Oracle database, from installation to using them efficiently.

The installation and database discussion in this book highlights the Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, but everything covered in this book also applies to the other editions of the Oracle database, including Oracle Database 11g. The PHP you write for Oracle Database 10g Express Edition can be run, without change, against all editions of the Oracle database as well.

The book contains much unique material on PHP’s Oracle OCI8 and PDO_OCI extensions. It also incorporates several updated installation guides previously published on the Oracle Technology Network web site. The chapter on globalization is derived from the Oracle Database Express Edition 2 Day Plus PHP Developer Guide. Sue Harper contributed the chapter on SQL Developer. The chapter on PHP Scalability and High Availability is derived from the Oracle whitepaper, PHP Scalability and High Availability, April 2008.

There weren’t too many supporters for the Wii console from Nintedo before the launch. Sure, it sounded great on paper (or better yet online), but the low processing power and the simplicity of the design and concept were a deterrent. 1.1 About the Acorn Programme
This is a programme we have developed to help people who harm themselves, or who use other self-defeating behaviours to cope with their experiences. This guide is intended to explain what we do and why, and what we will expect of you on the programme.

1.2 What are Self-defeating Behaviours
Self-defeating behaviours might be self-harming behaviours, which can take a range of forms. We most commonly think of taking repeated overdoses of tablets or of cutting oneself, but people find many ways to harm themselves. Other examples are drug or alcohol abuse, eating disorders or stealing. They are dangerous and humiliating behaviours for those who do them, and frightening or worrying to those who witness them.

Self-defeating behaviours can also be less immediately damaging, but nevertheless lead to distress. This would include things like withdrawing into isolation and avoiding contact with others, or becoming dissociated so as to lose contact with what is going on around you.
